Integrated Border Management
In order to improve the movement of persons and goods across borders without compromising security, Armenia and the European Union cooperate on border management issues. An effective system for Integrated Border Management (IBM) will benefit not only the border control authorities but also the Armenian and neighbouring populations. It will help free movement, boost economic growth and improve security in a cost-effective manner.
This will also benefit negotiations between the European Union and Armenia regarding visa facilitation and readmission agreements because an effective and efficient Integrated Border Management system is one of the key requirements for signing such agreements.
South Caucasus
The EU Advisory Group assists the Armenian Border Control Authorities and the National Security Council in implementing and monitoring a comprehensive IBM action plan and encourages cooperation on border management issues. This assistance is provided in close cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme of Armenia, under whose management the South Caucasus Integrated Border Management project is being implemented. That project is too funded by the European Union.
Currently, the EU Advisory Group assists in:
- Delivering a National Action Plan for the implementation of the 'Border Security and Integrated State Border Management Strategy of the Republic of Armenia';
- Identifying how to access finance to support the improvement of operations at the border with Georgia;
- Advising the National Security Council in its coordinating role.
